Introduction to the Symposium

This Symposium is devoted to the vibrations of continuous systems (e.g. strings, rods, straight and curved beams, membranes, plates, shells, and three-dimensional bodies). Experts in these areas are being invited from all over the world. The primary objective of the Symposium is to present ideas, new ones and old ones, and to receive comments on them from other participants. To accomplish this, the Symposium is limited to 50 persons and 40 presentations. This enables participants to hear all presentations and discussions. Furthermore, the Symposium is kept informal to promote discussion.

Scientific and technical presentations will typically begin at 8:30AM, with each session lasting about 4 1/2 hours. Some time will be allowed after each presentation for discussion. Participants will be invited to take part in further discussions of the day's presentations in the same evening.

Following the tradition of the previous Symposia, there will be half-day walks and excursions, typically in the afternoons after lunch. The walks will be normally about 2-3 hours.
